1. Purpose

The Heritage and History Committee advances education and preserves local heritage by celebrating, documenting, and interpreting the history and traditions of Portugal Cove-St. Philip’s. It supports the AWH Group’s mission by fostering intergenerational connections and ensuring the cultural significance of the site and traditions of the community is honored and preserved.

2. Scope

The Heritage and History Committee is responsible for planning and supporting initiatives that preserve and celebrate local history. These include documenting community traditions, managing archives, and fostering connections between generations through programming. The committee collaborates with other AWH committees to integrate Heritage and History into broader organizational initiatives.

3. Goals and Objectives

To goal of the Heritage and History committee is advance education and preserve local heritage through initiatives that celebrate, document, and interpret the history and traditions of the community.

Objectives:

1. To assist in the preservation and  recording of our heritage and history

2. To assist in the education to the general public and local schools about the heritage and history of PCSP.

3.  Facilitate the creation and us of spaces for preserving and displaying local artifacts, historical documents, and cultural items.

4. Organize intergenerational programs that teach traditional skills and activities , such as net-mending, storytelling, gardening and activities such as mummering.

5. Host events and interactive experiences to celebrate the historical and cultural significance of our community.

6. Pursue access preservation of our significant artifacts and documents/records.

7. Digitizing for online access to documents and records.
